Scientists have identified a genetic defect in some
people who have trouble growing hair, opening a new avenue for research on treatments for baldness, according to a study in Friday’s edition of the journal Science.
An enzyme called lipase H may help hair grow and develop, researchers wrote. A specific gene, LIPH, which allows the body to produce the enzyme, is defective in some members of Russia’s Chuvash and Mari populations, in which even young girls sometimes inherit a form of baldness, the scientists found.
About one in four men begin to lose hair by age 30, and two in three will be bald or “have a balding pattern” by 60, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. While drugs such as Pfizer Inc.’s Rogaine are sold to treat hair loss, the medicines don’t work for everyone and the response can’t be predicted.
The new research “identifies a novel molecular pathway in regulation of hair growth,” Evgeny Rogaev, leader of the study and a geneticist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, said in a Tuesday e-mail. “Experiments in animals will be required to prove these predictions.”
The search for a cure for baldness began at least 3,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians treated hair loss with fats from crocodiles and geese, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s Web site.
The scientists speculated that mutation in the LIPH gene makes the enzyme ineffective, arresting hair growth.
Current treatments are no blockbusters, according to analysts.
“The problem is that the drugs don’t work that well,” Mike Krensavage, an analyst with Raymond James in New York, said in a phone interview.
“The market would be huge if something worked.”

For many women, it’s their crowning glory.
They spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars a year cutting, coloring and styling their hair.
But what happens when it begins to fall out?
Imagine what it would be like to be a fortysomething woman and losing it.
“I was washing my hair, and I started feeling these long strands of hair in my hands,” Lois Alberts said.
The evidence was indisputable. Lois Alberts was beginning to go bald.
“What bothers me about the hair loss is not that I have thin hair, but that you’re beginning to see my scalp more and more and I’m having to change my hair style a little bit to try and cover that up,” she said.
Dr. Adeliade Hebert diagnosed her with alopecia, or female pattern baldness.
“We can often interrupt the progression of hair loss in certain patients,” Dr. Hebert said.
The most common treatment is Minoxidil, which is also known as Rogaine. While there is a solution for women and a stronger one for men, both are safe for either sex to use.
“If we can just stop the hair loss, I’ll be happy with that,” Alberts said.
Lois’s alopecia is most likely inherited from her mother.
A hormone imbalance is another possible cause for some women.
“Once I think we get a better understanding of why this happens we’ll probably be able to direct our therapy more comprehensively,” Dr. Hebert said.

The hair loss drug finasteride can cause an artificial lowering
of prostate specific antigen, according to a new study.
Finasteride was originally approved for the treatment of a condition of the prostate called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). More recently, it has also been shown to treat genetic hair loss. Both conditions are caused by the action of dihydrotestosterone, which is produced from testosterone by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride works by blocking this enzyme. Lower concentrations are used to treat hair loss than are used in BPH.
Now researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern and collaborators elsewhere reveal a significant side effect to finasteride used in hair loss. It artificially lowers the levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA), the blood marker used to screen for prostate cancer. This has serious implications for the accuracy of prostate cancer screening, as many men take finasteride for hair loss. The level will need to be multiplied, say the researchers, to get a truer value. Otherwise men at risk of prostate cancer could be missed because of their artificially low PSA levels.

Unhealthy hair doesn’t just look bad; it sounds bad as well,
or at least it sounds loud — this according to the Tokyo-based Kao Corporation. The company’s Hair Check system, a comblike device outfitted with a microphone, takes sonic readings of the friction generated when you run it through your hair. It uses this information to measure damage from dyes, bleaches and other wear and tear. The greater the damage, the greater the friction, the greater the sound.
The comb — actually more similar in appearance to an electric hair trimmer — feeds the data into computer software for analysis in real time. Headphones let the user listen in. The signal (which sounds a little like static on a shortwave radio) is then plotted on an on-screen graph: the horizontal axis follows the length of the hair from root to tip and the vertical axis shows the strength of the signal from 0 to 100. A reading of 33 or lower is deemed “healthy,” 33 to 66 is “on the brink of damage” and a reading of 66 or above, most often taken at the tip, home of split ends, is “damaged.” The system pinpoints the exact location of the problem. “Sometimes, a spike is observed,” says Satoshi Shibuichi, one of the invention’s developers. “This may be a tangled part.”
Kao — which also makes shampoos and conditioners — plans to use the device in stores and trade shows to promote its hair-care brands (like John Frieda Frizz-Ease). It has already started doing so in Tokyo, where consumers receive a printout of their hair analysis that, like an EKG, can help a professional decide on the best course of treatment.

Study Involved Ladies that Used Hair Loss Finateride Treatment For Pattern Baldness

The medication approved for hair loss in men, Finateride (Propecia or Proscar), may also help prevent hair loss in women, when combined with oral contraceptives. When people think about hair loss they typically think of balding men, not women. The truth is that both men and women lose hair and about half of all women experience pattern hair loss.
According to the report, if the hair loss is untreated it will likely get worse. The current treatments include minoxidil, a medication typically applied to the scalp to encourage hair regrowth. Minoxidil is effective, but not always well accepted by patients.
Italian researchers evaluated the effectiveness of 2.5 milligrams of finasteride taken by mouth daily and combined with an oral contraceptive in 37 women between the ages 19 and 50 years. Since Finasteride has been linked to birth defects, all the women were required to use birth control pills. The contraceptives were the type that reduced male hormone levels, because that effect may also contribute to the treatment of hair loss.
Matilde Iorizzo, M.D., and colleagues at the University of Bologna, Italy, evaluated the effectiveness by comparing photographs before and after the treatments and by measuring hair density with a technique known as computerized light videodermoscopy. After 12 months the researchers compared the hair loss or gains.
They found that “23 (62 percent) patients were rated as improved using comparisons of the photographs. Thirteen patients did not improve, and one patient’s condition worsened. Hair density scores increased in 12 patients. On a questionnaire, 29 patients reported that their condition improved after 12 months, eight said that it had stabilized and none reported that it had worsened. None of the participants had adverse reactions to the treatment.”
The results are published in the March issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
